And you'll notice up here, Binaries for base contribution, this is what you want to install R for the first time. And so we're going to be brought to this page, R for Windows. But what we want to do is we want to click on Download R for Windows. So there's actually a journal for using R.

MATT DENNY : some manuals and FAQs, also the R Journal. And we're going to be talking about those quite a bit. So we can see that we're going to be able get access to not only download and install R, which is up here in this front pain, but other things like R packages- so these extend R. MATT DENNY : And so we're going to get to this pretty sweet website, very, very basic, but it works. And it's also the home for all of the add-on functionality, the user created packages for R, in addition to a bunch of other stuff. And so what the Comprehensive R Archive Network is is it's the home for the latest and greatest version of R. It actually stands for the Comprehensive R Archive And what I get to type in is C-R-A-N, all capitals. MATT DENNY : but the instructions I'm going to give you, if you follow up with them, it's going to be pretty simple for you to be able to install this on a PC, on a Windows machine. So you can either follow this download link that I've linked, or you can follow me over to Google, and I'll show you an easier way to get to download R. MATT DENNY : develop R, can be helpful for actually getting the most out of R, which is something that we really want to do. And so installing RTools first, which is a package that's nicely provided by the folks that MATT DENNY : And that's because Windows by default doesn't come with a lot of the software libraries, things like compilers for other languages, like C and C++ or Python or whatever else that we can actually link up to R to extend its functionality. But if you don't get RTools, then you won't be able to access all of the additional functionality that we're going to talk about later in this course. So one of the downsides of the base version of R that you can get for Windows- so you don't need to install RTools technically to make our work. MATT DENNY : that will allow R to do a lot more useful things. It's a set of add-on libraries for R on Windows So the first thing that we're going to do is we're going to install something called RTools. And this is really actually a two-part process. So what we're going to cover here is installing R on Windows. And welcome to this lecture on Installing R on Windows.
